What is up everyone? It's Josh Trent, This is Wellness + Wisdom, a podcast where we look at our life through this lens of 5 whole ways of self – the physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, and financial you, the person that signed up to be here on earth, right?

To master it, to live their life well, but not just to live well, to thrive. This is our AMA today. It's number 653. And I'm as always here with my co-host Mar. How are you doing today?

I'm well rested after the weekend, surfed out, and just happy that I can spend my time in nature as much as I can during the weekends or during my free time. And also approaching pain differently this time because my back pain appeared again after surfing.

And so I gave it some rest instead of pushing through the pain and it feels so much better. I feel like I'm finally listening to my body and giving it when it needs instead of punishing it more and more and more. So yeah, things are good.

It sounds good. And y'all, if you've listened to AMAs before, then you know Maa lives out in the ocean on an island called Azores, which is so beautiful. It is a place that honestly, like when I look at your Instagram, what's your Instagram handle by the way? It's @mar.seaoflove.

There are waterfalls. She's like basking in Hollywood scenes. It's pretty amazing. But one thing that I think your lifestyle can always be for us is a beacon and a reminder to be in nature it is so easy. And we're going to talk about, by the way, expressing yourself today.

So the topic of this AMA as it relates to nature, being in nature, being in the ocean, expressing yourself, moving your body, we're gonna dive deep into expression and why I believe and why I've always felt this way for probably 10 years or more the opposite of depression is expression…

[10:45] How to Use Expression to Heal Depression

Let's dig into this question today. And this is actually a question from Mar. So Mar, I'm gonna let you read it. I'm gonna let you read it because, gosh, it's so key to what we're doing every single these AMAs, right?
What is your question?

Okay, well, this is one of many, but I feel like it's the most important at this moment. And the question is:

“If the opposite of depression is expression, in what ways can expression help us heal? And what are the steps to start expressing ourselves authentically in the world?”

I'm taking a deep breath because something that I have firsthand experience on in my life all the time And especially in my early 20s and especially 30s, I can remember, and if y'all can relate to this, hit subscribe because what I'm gonna share is real I think it's universal for all human beings to experience depression at some point in their life and anxiety, right?

Mar, have you ever experienced depression or anxiety in your entire life? So I was never diagnosed with those things, but from how I felt, it felt like both of those things.

And that was during the pandemic because the pandemic time was a really difficult time of my life because I was not only stuck in the pandemic in Peru confinement, we couldn't really leave the house for several months, but I was also stuck in a really toxic relationship.

And so it just brought me down completely. And I'm grateful for that now because I can actually understand what people are going through when they go through all of these things. So I'm grateful I got the experience of it, but I wasn't actually trapped in it really deep.

Well, I love that you said I wasn't diagnosed, which I find so fascinating because a lot of these disorders are really just diagnoses of emotional dysregulation.

And emotional dysregulation, if you think about what emotion really is, right? Emotion is energy in motion. It's like you're either a dam or you're a river. So the body gets blocked, not just from the environment, but also from thoughts.

Thoughts and environment and food and energy and people and things can block energy flow in your system.

Now in the East, they call it prana, or in Asia, they call it chi. Here in the West, we call it energy, but it's all the same.

We have these meridians in our body, besides just the chakras, we have meridians or energy points in acupressure or acupuncture, the body can release stuck energy. Now you can also get really stuck energy through breathwork.

All these different modalities are essentially pointing to 1 thing, and that is you're either expressing, which is emotion, energy in motion, or you're depressing, which is energy in motion that's stuck. So think of that construct, y'all. You're either a dam or a river, right?

I'm gonna go back to this many times during this rant. Because it's a rant, It's me expressing, it's funny because I'm expressing myself and what I believe to be true.

And whenever we express ourselves, we always learn because the best way to integrate anything or to really feel what you're saying is by teaching it.

So if I'm teaching something or I'm guiding someone else or I'm sharing what I believe to be true about the world or like this, which is massive expression and depression, then by just the fact of me expressing myself, I am healing, I am learning while I am teaching. I think that's a really big point.

You do not have to be a black belt to teach a white belt. In other words, whatever lane you're in in life, I don't care if you're 18 years old listening to this, or if you're 80 years old, you can always become a teacher to others.

Not from an egoic place, not like, oh, I'm the teacher and you're the student. It's not like that. It's more like a real teacher, a real guide, does it from a place of love and of peace and of service.

You have seen this, Mar, and I know we all can relate to this. Certain people that are in the spiritual world, let's call them spiritual narcissists, right? And they teach from a place of egotism.

They teach from a place of, well, I'm on the mountain and I'm wearing the white cape and you should do exactly what I say because in my five-step proven method, it's always worked for me and it's maybe millions of dollars.

You do like making money don't you and you see these spiritual narcissists fucking shame people.

They shame people, first of all, they hook people from a wounding standpoint of depression or trauma, they find out through meta algorithms, and this is the danger by the way, of not expressing yourself, which I'll get to in a moment.

When you don't express yourself, you're easily monetized. You're more easily monetized and the system who creates these spiritual narcissists by the way because they're actually serving from their wounding but their wounding has clouded their wisdom.

These people can go out and they can hook you're not doing your deepest work on how to express your depression. Because remember the opposite of depression is expression…
