The Role of the Cannabinoid System in Pain Control

CBD or cannabinoid is herbal medicine, meaning it is a therapeutic remedy derived from a plant. In this instance, the Cannabis Sativa plant. Sativa has been utilized for medicinal effects for decades.

Cannabis Sativa comes in two varieties: hemp and marijuana. CBD, which is utilized in the majority of goods, is derived from the hemp plant.

How Does Endocannabinoid System Work?

The Role of the Cannabinoid System in Pain Control

The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a complicated cell-signaling mechanism. Experts are still attempting to figure out what the ECS is all about. However, we do know that it regulates a variety of activities and processes, including:

  • Sleep
  • Mood
  • Appetite
  • Memory
  • Fertility and reproduction

There are three main constituents of the Endocannabinoid System: endocannabinoids, receptors, and enzymes.

Endogenous cannabinoids, commonly known as endocannabinoids, are chemicals produced by your body. They’re like cannabinoids, except they’re made by your body. They aid in the smooth operation of internal processes.

Endocannabinoid receptors can be located all over the body. Endocannabinoids attach to them and provide a signal to the ECS that it needs to act accordingly.

Enzymes are in charge of breaking down endocannabinoids after they’ve served their purpose.

Which Functions Are Regulated by the Endocannabinoid System?

The Endocannabinoid System is complex, but it affects and regulates the following functions in our body:

  • Mood
  • Stress
  • Sleep
  • Memory
  • Metabolism
  • Liver function
  • Chronic pain
  • Motor control
  • Muscle formation
  • Skin and nerve function
  • Appetite and digestion
  • Immune system responses
  • Bone remodeling and growth
  • Reproductive system function
  • Cardiovascular system function

How Does CBD Interact With The ECS?

Cannabidiol or CBD is the other primary cannabinoid present in cannabis. Unlike THC or tetrahydrocannabinol, CBD does not get you high and usually has no harmful side effects.

CBD’s interaction with the ECS isn’t that well known. However, what is known is that CBD does not bind to the CB1 or CB2 receptors in the same manner that THC does. It works by inhibiting the breakdown of endocannabinoids. This enables them to have a greater impact on your body.

Evidence shows that hemp edibles can assist with pain, nausea, and other symptoms linked with various illnesses. They can also help alleviate skin and cosmetic issues.

What to Expect When Taking CBD for Pain

The Role of the Cannabinoid System in Pain Control

CBD has been advocated for a variety of uses. Although further research is needed, there is evidence that CBD can help with chronic (long-term) pain such as back pain, anxiety, and insomnia.

Many other conditions, such as movement disorders, multiple sclerosis, opioid withdrawal, schizophrenia, and tobacco cessation, are being studied with oral, topical, and inhaled CBD. CBD is also used to treat Parkinson’s disease symptoms. However, other research suggests against it.

Forms of CBD

CBD topical treatments, such as balms and ointments, should start working right away. Within 15 minutes of applying these to your body, you should begin to experience relief.

The findings differ for ingestible items such as capsules and gummies. Tinctures absorb within 30 seconds when held under the tongue, and the effects are noticed within 15 minutes. Therefore, you should expect to experience the benefits of CBD within 45 minutes to two hours after eating or consuming CBD-containing foods.

How Do You Know You are Getting the CBD that the Package Claims?

Along with the CBD, your choice of CBD isolate, full-spectrum CBD, or broad-spectrum CBD will define what you get in your product.

  • Full-spectrum CBD includes all of the cannabis plant’s naturally occurring components, including THC. The THC content in hemp-derived full-spectrum CBD, on the other hand, will be less than 0.3 percent by dry weight.
  • All of the naturally occurring components are present in broad-spectrum CBD, except for THC, which is generally eliminated.
  • CBD isolate is the purest form of CBD, free of any other hemp plant components. For example, THC isn’t present in CBD isolate.

Choose The Compound Depending On Your Requirements

Once you’ve done that, check the ingredients list of the product you have chosen. Ensure that the list states it has CBD or cannabidiol, or hemp extract. Don’t purchase it if it says hemp seeds, hempseed oil, or Cannabis sativa seed oil, as they are different from CBD. Also, ensure that the product doesn’t contain anything you are allergic to.

Here are some more tips for you to keep in mind:

  • CBD oil often has a carrier oil to help with the easy absorption of CBD.
  • A natural or artificial taste or coloring may be present in CBD oil or an edible.
  • Check the THC content in a full-spectrum product to make sure it suits your demands.
  • Broad or full-spectrum CBD list cannabinoids and terpenes included
  • Remember that a trustworthy CBD product comes with a Certificate of Analysis (COA). Always check for it before purchasing.
  • Verify if the CBD and THC concentrations on the COA correspond to those on the product label.
  • Check for heavy metal and pesticide analyses too.

Conclusion

CBD is one of the most preferred choices to help with back pain and sleeplessness, amongst other problems. However, it must be taken with caution and only from reputable sources because it is so readily available and suggested for so many issues. Remember to start with a tiny dose to observe how you react before moving on to a larger amount.

  1. Hi! While I was searching for articles on CBD and terpenes, I found yours. First of all, great article! I appreciate how you listed down the functions regulated by ECS. I also came across this infographic which I think would be a great read as well: How Terpenes Affect the Brain. Again, thanks for the insight!
