Breaking Free From Chronic Thinking With Jeff Agostinelli

It's easy to get ahead of ourselves and allow our emotions to control our lives, but that's not the purpose of our emotions.

Our emotions are the tools we need to help us break through from chronic thinking.

This week, Life Coach, Business Coach, and Podcast Host of The Next Level, Jeff Agostinelli, shares how we can take advantage of our emotions to truly listen to ourselves in order to think clearly, rediscover joy, and be free from pain.

Break the Cycle of Chronic Thinking

“A lot of people will try to reach out and they're stuck in a pattern of thought. We have an emotion and then there's a thought, there's an action, there's a behavior, there's a habit and they're all connected. Who's to say that we can't just move one of those things around and everything else will change?”- Jeff Agostinelli

When we're feeding into our emotions, we can find ourselves stuck in connecting thoughts, habits, and behaviors. But what if we try to change something? What then happens to our emotions?

If we try to change something in the way we think or act, it can create a new path for us to follow. We may be afraid of change and think that we can't change our lives. But we can change when we or another person takes a close look at what's going on in our lives.

To help us get started on breaking free from the cycle of chronic thinking, we must start by asking ourselves honest questions such as:

  • Do I really love my environment?
  • Do I really love want I'm doing?
  • Do I really love this relationship?

When we break free from chronic thinking, we get in touch with our emotions and move forward

Tap Into Your Emotions

“The gift inside of pain is the true expression of what the pain is meant to wake us up to. So if we're experiencing pain in a certain moment of our life, it's a momentary thing to let us know, “Okay, look, this thing has got to change.” – Jeff Agostinelli

It can be painful and strange to tap into our emotions, but it's the number one thing that we can manipulate and utilize to help us move forward. If we're experiencing pain from outliers such as our environment or other people, we can manipulate what we feel.

We just need to take a close look at the situation to recognize ourselves and what we're feeling. The point of identifying  and navigating emotion is not to hold on to it, but to be able to recognize it and to understand that it's trying to tell us something.

To tap into your emotions. Ask yourself the right questions to help you reach an understanding with yourself.

Don't ask questions such as:

  • Why can't I find a boyfriend/girlfriend?
  • What's going on?
  • Why do they have to be so hard work with?

Ask yourself:

  • Why am I creating these habits?
  • Why do I feel this way?
  • Why did I act like that?

Find Clarity In Your Thoughts

We're constantly evolving so in order to understand our emotions and feelings of pain, we need to re-assess ourselves regularly. When we're starting to feel pain again, we need to look at our top priorities and discover what's missing. We need to take some time give ourselves some self-care and self-love.

Part of this process is to find clarity in our thoughts. Here are three ways that Jeff suggests we find clarity in ourselves:

1. Meditation

Meditation allows us to give our bodies the space that it needs. It really helps us tap into our emotions and break free from chronic thinking.

2. Writing

Writing allows use to get all of those thoughts to get out of our minds and onto the physical piece of paper. This is a much stronger therapeutic practice than just talking about we're thinking because we're putting it into a deeper physical practice.

3. Movement

Movement can be whatever we want it to be-running, dancing, swimming, jumping etc. Movement is the practice that allows our bodies to do what they're meant to do: move. We're not created for sitting or standing all day.

Movement gives your body and mind what it needs to help it calm down.

About The Author, Lauren Bryant, Podcast Production

lauren bryant wellness forceLauren Bryant

is the Podcasting Assistant and Show Notes Writer for Wellness + Wisdom. She has a BBA in both Marketing and Spanish for Business as well as certificates in Advanced Business Communications and International Business from the University of Wisconsin- Eau Claire.

Lauren’s wellness journey began at a young age when she joined her local YMCA swim team, The Wave, of La Crosse, WI. One of the most profound views on wellness that anyone has said to her was when she was an assistant swim coach for that same YMCA swim team.

One day during a practice, former head swim coach, Jon Brenner, shared with her that the most important thing about coaching the swimmers was that “It doesn’t matter if they become the best athletes in the world. What’s important is that we give them the tools and guidance they need to live a healthy, active lifestyle for the rest of their lives.”

Since hearing those words, she has taken it to heart to not only focus on continuously living her own healthy lifestyle, but to help others pursue their wellness goals as well.

Lauren is not only an avid swimmer, but a fan of running, yoga, cooking, and doing any activity outside that involves being surrounded by nature. In the Fall of 2014, she completed a long-awaited goal of walking the Camino de Santiago in Spain.

According to Lauren, wellness is about finding gratitude and joy in doing any type of physical or self-care activity that we love. Wellness means providing ourselves with self-love, good nutrition, and the inner peace that our individual minds and bodies need.
