Listen To Episode 400 As Cal Callahan Uncovers:

“You may have an idea of where you want to be; make it an aim that's really wide versus a goal. A goal feels like it's a flag in the ground that says ‘I'm going to go out there; that's where I want to be.' You have no idea! Can you be here now in what is really good? Okay, pay attention and start to gather those things that make you feel really good and start to pull away from the things that are a ‘No.'” – Cal Callahan

  • Lessons from his parents owning a grocery store that Cal got the gift of unlearning later on in life.
  • Resiliency that he built up as a child with parents both working and how that helped him fend for himself.

  • The fact that resiliency isn't good or bad but how we use it can lead to different outcomes.
  • Lessons he learned as a child about how to show up and provide for his family.
  • How he's been navigating his relationship with his wife and his experience trying to understand what isn't allowing him to be fully vulnerable and allow her to care for him.
  • Why he and his wife reached out to a facilitator to help them communicate better in their relationship and a big takeaway was to reparent the part of himself that felt like he couldn't receive.
  • How he was able to let go of focusing so much on how he's supposed to show up as the man in the relationship to personally help him and his marriage heal.
  • Why being vulnerable is actually you being strong

[31:30] Why Vulnerability Is Strength

  • Breaking down what it actually means to be vulnerable and how he teaches vulnerability to other people.
  • Why it's so important to question why you've always done things the way you have but with kindness towards your past self.
  • The fact that unless you accept all of the things you have done, you will never move through it and forward.
  • How to put away and stop the extra distractions from coming into your healing process.
  • Why he enjoys japa meditation and how it's become part of his morning routine.
  • A step by step guide to practicing japa meditation at home and why it's been so beneficial for him.
  • Why starting his podcast, The Great Unlearn, has been amazing medicine for his healing journey.

[40:30] How To Grow On Your Own Terms

  • The importance of understanding that we all have our own truths but we don't need them to be right because we are all living our own unique experiences.
  • The Way of the Superior Man by David Deida
  • The moment Cal knew that his job working on the trading floor was no longer a place for him to follow his purpose.
  • Why you don't have to apply all of the knowledge you have gathered and learned; just pick out the parts that you want to explore.
  • How he was focused more on playing instead of getting everything right when using tools during his wellness journey like breathwork and meditation.
  • What steps he has taken to start paying attention to what calls on him.
  • Why your life's purpose might not be so obvious but your intuition will kind of ‘tickle you' and gently guide you to it.
  • The fact that there's no end to the healing journey; we're always on the path of learning.
  • How he began the process to shed his old identity and stop focusing on who he was physically on the outside and step into doing the real inner work.

[50:30] The Art Of Surrender

  • Why so many people still have to learn the art of surrender; especially fellow podcast hosts and influencers.
  • Cal's definition of the word, “surrender,” and it's connection to the Great Unlearn.
  • Why you can't really surrender until you understand that you're perfect just the way you are and you're doing the best you can.
  • The power of pausing and working through the root cause of your triggers.
  • How our triggers run programs in our mind depending on the situation at hand.
  • What programs have been running in his mind that he knows it's time to unlearn.
  • How his wife helped him point out his programs and old, negative thoughts that were running in the background still.
  • Why language and energy go hand in hand in programming and letting go.
  • The inner work that Josh has done on his own and in his relationship with his partner, Carrie.
  • What you can do to be there for you partner to let them know that they're seen, heard, and supported by you.
  • How you can find the spiritual courage to accept and then let go of repeated patterns.
  • Why repeated cycles of shame mean there is more work that needs to be done.

[1:01:00] Unlearn Your Programs & Find Your Purpose

  • Solocast: God Is Love
  • The shame he felt of not showing up as a husband for his wife, Peyton, and not being present with his family through connection.
  • The programmed cycle he was on for awhile that said, “You're a trader. You need to make it,” which took him away from being with his family.
  • Why so many people don't actually find their purpose until they have unlearned all of their programming.
  • How to start finely tuning into the things that bring you joy and make you feel alive to find your purpose and inner happiness.
  • What Cal did to start paying attention to what truly called him – being a health coach – instead of being a trader.
  • Signs to look for in your life: what do you read on your spare time? What do you check out on the internet? What do you do in your free time? Who do you like to spend time with?
  • Breaking down what blocks people from their purpose: money, the opinion of others, media, parental example, and more.
  • How to get unstuck from the “I'm comfortable” mindset and find new ways to grow and enjoy life.
  • Why it's so important to find something that you enjoy over focusing 100% on how much money you are making.

Power Quotes From The Show

Why You Don't Have To Always Be Resilient

“Because my parents were working all the time, I had built up a lot of resilience which can be beneficial but there's a lot to be learned when you have to fend for yourself at a young age. I've been able to endure a lot and what I needed to unlearn within that was that I don't need to do it all by myself. That's a lesson that has been really difficult for me to learn but as I have let go, called on my brothers and sisters for help, I've started to feel much more connected to others. Resiliency isn't good or bad, we just have to think about how we're using it. Sometimes it doesn't feel good to be resilient all the time like when my wife is trying to connect with and see the real me.” – Cal Callahan

Starting The Inner Work Journey

“To reign in the power of vulnerability, you have to do the inner work and be willing to question all the ways you have done things but be kind to your past self because if you can't accept all that you have done including all the ‘shitty things,' you will never move through it. Part of the journey is the ability to hold yourself when you really need it as you're going through that process but it's also about getting quiet too. It's about lessening the distractions; stop adding things to your plate and begin focusing on what is going on below the surface.” – Cal Callahan

Working With Our Triggers

“You can't really surrender until you understand that you are perfect just as you are. When you understand that each of us is doing the best we can, you're perfect. You're doing the best you can and sometimes you will do better and be in a better space than other times but that's just where you're at. When we understand that, we don't continue to beat ourselves up. When you feel triggered, how can you work with that instead of feeling bad about it? That's your work.” – Cal Callahan
