Integrative Wellness In The Modern World – Dr. Roger Mignosa

Integrative Wellness In The Modern World – Dr. Roger Mignosa

“True healing calls for an integrated approach to our physical, mental, and emotional wellness.” – Dr. Roger Mignosa

From head to toe, we are all highly connected and comprehensive human beings. The physical and mental aspects of our life affect each other in powerful ways and the appearingly separate systems of the body are actually heavily interrelated.

Knowing that these different aspects of our well-being all correlate, why is it that so many health care professionals still operate with a reductionist mentality, focus on localized symptoms, and fail to appreciate and examine the entire chain of events that could help lead to the real root cause of our issues?

Today we are live at RockTapes's “Rock Stock 2017” with Dr. Roger Mignosa, Osteopath, Ironman Triathlete, and Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Specialist, as he explains how we can recover and heal the body and mind through holistic and integrated wellness. His approach to health care puts the patient at the center and addresses the full range of physical, emotional, mental, social, spiritual and environmental influences that affect a person’s health.

Academy of Integrative Pain Management

MISSION: To Improve the Lives of People With Pain by Advancing a Person-centered, Integrative Model of Pain Care Through Evidence-Guided Education, Credentialing, and Advocacy

For almost 30 years, we have been, and still are, the only national professional organization dedicated to advancing the integrative pain care approaches that now define “best practice” in the National Pain Strategy published by NIH.

We define integrative pain management as a model of care that is patient-centered; considers the whole person; encourages healthful lifestyle changes as part of the first line of treatment to restore wellness; is evidence-based and brings together all appropriate therapeutic approaches and clinicians to reduce pain and achieve optimal health and healing; and encourages a team approach.

Academy of Integrative Health & Medicine

The Academy of Integrative Health & Medicine is a society and global community of professionals and health seekers. AIHM provides innovative education, training, leadership, interprofessional collaboration, research, and advocacy that embraces all global healing traditions, to promote the creation of health and the delivery of evidence-informed comprehensive, affordable, sustainable person-centered care.

The Academy of Integrative Health & Medicine (AIHM) emerged in 2013 as a solution to our growing health care crisis. The formation of the AIHM is a bold response to a call to action for change — to transform the way we think about health and health care. The Academy is home to a broadening international community of healthcare practitioners, health seekers, and advocates connected by a shared holistic philosophy of person-centered care. The AIHM community recognizes the link between our health and the state of the planet and deeply considers the social determinants of health and the quality of our relationships to ourselves and one another.

One irony of the integrative health care movement is that while there is an increasing abundance of integrative practitioners, they often operate separately from one another. Interprofessional communication, collaboration, education and team-based care are at the heart of the AIHM’s mission as we unite the many voices in integrative health and medicine to transform health care together.

About Dr. Roger Mignosa

Dr. Mignosa had the opportunity to transform his own experience with injuries and pain through an integrative approach to healing. During his teenage years, he was an avid athlete who battled constant injuries. Eventually, a surgeon told him that he should quit running. At the age of 16, Dr. Mignosa rejected this opinion and questioned the mindset of how medicine treats disorders of structure and function. Instead, he embraced a mindset of building health and focused on educating himself on health and healing.

In his own rehabilitation efforts, Dr. Mignosa employed exercise physiology, nutrition and positive psychology. Due to the determination to heal, he returned to running on the Cross Country team in high school, joined the swim team in college, and earned status as an All-American Triathlete and Ironman in graduate school. It was these events that led Dr. Mignosa on the path to medical school and a career in medicine.

Dr. Mignosa was a Regent Scholar at the University of California, Irvine, where he earned a Bachelors of Science in Chemistry and Biochemistry. He became an Ambassadorial Scholar for Rotary International and was awarded a scholarship to attend the University of Queensland, Australia where he earned a graduate degree in Clinical Exercise Science. Upon returning to Orange County, he led exercise physiology programs at hospitals and wellness centers. He attended medical school at Touro University California where he became a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine. Under a grant from the Association of Academic Physiatrists (AAP), Dr. Mignosa conducted research at Stanford University on quality of life with severe physical trauma. Dr. Mignosa completed residency training at the University of California, Los Angeles with a specialty in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R).

In addition to clinical practice, Dr. Mignosa greatly values medical education. While Dr. Mignosa was still in medical school, he began lecturing at the University of Arizona, School of Medicine, Center for Integrative Medicine and has been doing so since 2011. He continues to lecture at medical schools, present at national and international medical conferences, and serve as a consultant to medical professionals.

Dr. Mignosa lives an active lifestyle as he runs, swims, cycles, and surfs and implements his own practices of postural correction, foundation training, and body mechanics. He seeks to help people who struggle with pain and love to move. Dr. Mignosa is passionate about advancing the field of medicine towards sustainable practices that are safe, affordable and effective.
